According to the Mesoamerican Regional Monitoring and Visualization System (SERVIR), at least 12 forest fires had been reported in Nicaragua since the beginning of the year as of Thursday, March 15. The most affected areas are northern Chinandega and León departments. No major damages or casualties have been reported as of March 17, but associated hazards and disruptions (potential road closures, evacuation orders, etc.) remain possible.

Context

Nicaragua's dry season lasts from November to April each year, exacerbating the risk of forest fires throughout the country. Approximately 700 square kilometers (270 square miles) of forest are burned every year from such fires.
