Germany: Protests in Hamburg March 17

Protest marches and separate soccer match planned in Hamburg on March 17; violence possible at both events

Anarchist and anti-government groups have planned a large demonstration against alleged police brutality that will take place in Hamburg on Saturday, March 17. The demonstration will begin at 14:00 (local time) in Gänsemarkt, after which participants plan to march to Schanzenviertel. A second march in support of Kurds in the Syrian conflict will take also take place, but details have not yet been released. Police have deployed additional personnel in the area ahead of the events. Violent clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

In a separate event, a soccer match between Hamburger SV and Hertha Berlin is set to take place at 15:30 at Volksparkstadion. Violent clashes are possible between fans of the two teams in the vicinity of the match.
