Argentina: Women’s marches and strikes March 8 /update 1

Marches and strikes will take place in cities throughout Argentina on Thursday, March 8, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The largest demonstrations will take place in the capital Buenos Aires, where protesters will march to the Congress building from various points in the city for the main rally set to begin at 17:30 (local time). However, protests and associated roadblocks will begin early in the day, with major disruptions to road traffic and bus services anticipated in the downtown area from midday.

The strike will affect a wide range of sections, notably those with a high percentage of female employees (e.g. education, healthcare, retail, etc.). Widespread commercial disruptions are expected and schools may be closed.  Furthermore, at 11:00 ruidazos, the banging of pots and pans in protest, will be held in workplaces throughout the country.

Context

Numerous causes will be championed during Thursday’s demonstrations, including ending gender-based and domestic violence, legalized abortion, pay equality, labor reform, and pro-democracy measures. A massive influx of women from around the country is expected in the capital.
