Fiji: Heavy rain forecast February 2-7

Heavy rain forecast for Fiji February 2-7; heavy rain warning in effect for Yasawa Islands, Mamanuca Islands, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau, and Lomaiviti Islands

Warning

Event

Heavy rain is forecast in Fiji from Friday, February 2, at least through Wednesday, February 7. The Fiji Meteorological Service has accordingly issued a heavy rain warning for the Yasawa Islands, Mamanuca Islands, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau, and the Lomaiviti Islands. In addition, a tropical depression is expected to pass close to Fiji early in the week beginning Monday, February 5, bringing high winds and additional rainfall.

Rainfall accumulations may exceed 10 cm (3.9 in) in 24 hours in some areas over the next several days; flash flooding is possible - particularly in low-lying areas - in Fiji in the coming days, as well as consequent transportation disruptions.

Advice

Individuals present in areas affected by heavy rains are advised to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities, to keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and to be prepared for transportation disruptions until the situation normalizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and foodstuffs discarded.
