Various incidents of violent looting and rioting occurred in the western state of Mérida on Thursday, January 11. According to the government, at least four people were killed and a dozen injured. This is the latest in a string of similar incidents to occur in the country in recent days and months, amid severe food shortages and massive inflation, which has rendered the acquisition of basic goods a major daily concern. Further such incidents are to be anticipated.
