Uruguay: General strike January 9

National general strike in Uruguay January 9 from 14:00 to midnight; associated protests possible, notably in Montevideo

Warning

Event

The PIT-CNT union has called for a general strike to take place on Tuesday, January 9, starting at 14:00 (local time) and running until midnight. Workers from various industries represented by the umbrella union will take part and as such transportation and service disruptions are to be anticipated. Associated demonstrations are also likely, particularly in the capital Montevideo.

Further strike actions are expected in the first week of February.

Context

The strike is being organized to denounce the recent murders of a taxi driver, a union leader, and two women that occurred in the first few days of 2018.

Advice

Individuals present in Uruguay are advised to avoid demonstrations as a precaution and allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
