Tsunami alerts and watches for Alaska and west coast of US and Canada canceled January 23

Tsunami alerts of varying severities issued for Alaska and the western coast of Canada and the United States (British Columbia province and the states of Washington, Oregon, and California) have all been canceled.

The alerts had been issued following a 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off the southern coast of Alaska at 00:31 (local time) on Tuesday, January 23. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 280 km (175 mi) southeast of the Alaskan town of Kodiak. There have been no reports of injuries or damages.

Individuals in southern Alaska are advised to be prepared for possible aftershocks.
