Tsunami alert for southern Alaska and British Columbia January 23 following offshore earthquake; tsunami watch for US west coast

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Alaska at 00:31 (local time) on Tuesday, January 23. A tsunami alert has been issued for coastal areas of Alaska and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Lower tsunami watches are in place for the US states of Washington, Oregon, and California. Individuals in coastal areas of Alaska are being advised to immediately move inland and/or seek higher ground.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located 300 km (185 mi) southeast of the Alaskan town of Kodiak.
