UK Met Office issues Amber warning for northern Britain and southern Scotland; Yellow warning in effect across much of the UK January 17-18

The UK Met Office has issued an Amber warning for snow from 21:00 (local time) on Wednesday, January 17, until 05:00 on Thursday, January 18, for northern Britain and southern Scotland due to a winter storm. A Yellow warning for snow is also currently in effect across much of the UK until 11:00 (local time) on Thursday.

Scottish Police and transportation officials have also issued a Level 4 "do not travel" warning (the highest on a scale from 1 to 4), advising all individuals in Scotland to avoid traveling by road through January 18. According to local sources, at least 300 schools were closed throughout Scotland on Wednesday.

Severe transportation disruptions are expected to persist for the duration of the storm.
