Warning

Event

A series of nationwide strikes are expected to be held in Togo between Tuesday, January 30, and Thursday, February 8. Teachers unions will launch a 72-hour strike on January 30. Health care workers are expected to launch a strike on January 31 and February 1; it is unclear to what extent the healthcare workers' strike will affect available medical services. Public sector workers also plan to strike from Monday, February 4, through Thursday, February 8. Associated demonstrations and large public gatherings are anticipated in Lomé and in other locations during the strikes.

Context

Togolese education workers have held a series of strikes since March 2017, in protest of the government's alleged violations of a January 2017 agreement with the teachers' unions.  Medical sector employees are planning their respective strike to protest poor working conditions and the lack of vital equipment in hospitals and clinics nationwide. Public sector workers are striking in solidarity with workers of the Ministry of Civil Service and Administrative Reforms, who are demanding increased bonus payments and improved facilities.

Advice

Individuals in Togo are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and to adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.

Furthermore, individuals are advised to confirm doctor's appointments and to anticipate longer waiting times in medical facilities for the duration of the medical workers' strike.
