Water shortages reported in areas of Peru (Caravelí province) hit by January 14 earthquake

Warning

Event

Water shortages have been reported in areas hit by a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake on Sunday, January 14. As of Tuesday evening, two districts of Caravelí province (Arequipa region; southwest) - Bella Unión and Acarí - remained without running water. The cuts are due to a rockslide triggered by the earthquake that damaged a pipeline in La Joya. It is unclear when the damages will be repaired.

Context

Sunday’s earthquake left two people dead and 65 others injured in the Arequipa, Ica, and Ayacucho regions. Road and homes were damaged. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck approximately 40 km (25 mi) south-southwest of Acarí (Arequipa region) in the Pacific Ocean.

Advice

Individuals present in the impacted regions are advised to stock up on bottled water and be prepared for aftershocks in the coming days and weeks.
