Bus crash on highway north of Lima kills at least 48 people January 2

At least 48 people were killed when a bus crashed into another vehicle and was knocked off a cliff on Tuesday, January 2. The incident occurred on the Panamericana Norte highway in the Pasamayo area between Huacho and Lima.  Six people were also injured in the accident, and emergency services are looking for three missing passengers. Police have opened an investigation into the accident.

Road conditions and safety enforcement are poor in many areas of the Peru, where accidents kill dozens of people every year.

Individuals in the Peru are advised to exercise extreme caution while traveling in motor vehicles; driving is rarely policed and roads are commonly unpaved with very sharp curves. If possible, only use well-established companies when hiring transportation in the region.
