Flash floods hit Johor, Sabah, and Pahang state January 2; additional flooding likely in Kelantan state

Warning

Event

Flooding was reported across the states of Johor, Sabah, and Pahang states on Tuesday, January 2, due to heavy rain that has been falling since Sunday, December 31. The flooding has triggered the evacuation of at least 1500 people. Evacuations have been reported in the following districts: Mersing and Kota Tinggi (Johor state), Rompin, Kuantan, and Jerantut (Pahang state), and Tongod (Sabah state). Heavy rain is forecast to continue to affect Pahang, Johore, and Sabah states at least through Wednesday, January 3.

Officials in Kelantan state are warning that water levels may rise significantly beginning around 01:00 (local time) on Wednesday, January 3, due to ongoing rainfall. Additional flooding is expected to occur in the Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, and Tumpat districts.

Context

Flooding occurs annually during the monsoon season in Malaysia (typically October through February) and regularly results in casualties, mass evacuations, and business and school closures.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
