One hundred Amal supporters marching towards Beirut International Airport (BEY) January 31

Warning

Event

As of Wednesday morning (local time), January 31, around one hundred supporters of the Amal political party are reportedly marching towards Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY). The protest may cause traffic disruptions around the airport and on the highway to and from Beirut city center.

Due to heightened political tensions, further protests may erupt in the coming days.

Context

This demonstration is taking place following three days of protests sparked by controversial statements made by a Free Patriotic Movement (Aounist party) leader accusing Amal party President of Parliament Nahib Berry of blocking reforms and labeling him a “thug.” Over the past few days, protesters have erected roadblocks and set fire to tires in various areas of the capital Beirut, and related demonstrations have taken place in several cities.

Advice

Individuals in Lebanon are advised to monitor the situation, allow for extra time to reach the airport, and avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of violence.
