Lebanon: Lebanon: Political protests, roadblocks January 28-29

On January 28 -29, supporters of the Amal political movement took the streets following controversial statements made by a Free Patriotic Movement (Aounist party) leader accusing Amal party President of Parliament Nahib Berry of blocking reforms and labeling him a “thug.” The protesters organized roadblocks and set fire to tires in various areas of the capital Beirut, including in Mar Elias and Shatila refugee camps, Msaytbeh, Bir Hassan, Ras Al-Naba’a, Mazraa, and near Salim Salam bridge. In addition, supporters blocked the Zahlé-Baalbeck highway, while others demonstrated in the southern cities of Sidon and Tyre. Unconfirmed clashes between opposing sides were reported in the capital on January 28.

Security forces were quickly deployed on the ground to control the situation; however, due to heightened political tensions, further protests may erupt in the coming days.
