Jordan: Demonstrations possible due to increase in bread prices

Jordan has a public debt of USD 35 billion, which amounts to 90 percent of its GDP. In January 2018, the Jordanian government increased the prices of fuel and bread, as well as the value-added tax on various consumer goods such as cigarettes, sparkling drinks, and jewelry. Simultaneously, the government announced a financial aid package worth USD 761 million to help households in difficulty.
In 2017, protests erupted following a similar increase in consumer prices.
