Ethiopia to host 30th African Union Heads of State summit in Addis Ababa Jan. 28-29

The Ethiopian government is currently hosting the 30th African Union Heads of State summit in Addis Ababa from Sunday, January 28, to Monday, January 29. Following the arrival of leaders from across the continent, additional security measures have been implemented throughout the capital. The conference is being held at the African Union (AU) headquarters.

Roadblocks in the vicinity of the AU headquarters are to be expected and associated transportation disruptions are likely.

Context

During this summit, Guinean President Alpha Conde will pass the AU presidency to Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Significant reforms - including institutional and financial reforms - are also expected to be discussed. 

Advice

Individuals present in Addis Ababa during the January 28-29 summit are advised to anticipate heightened security throughout the capital, to allow for additional travel time, and to avoid large public gatherings.
