Benin: Judiciary workers launch 72-hour strike Jan. 2

On Tuesday, January 2, members of four of the country’s eight judiciary workers’ unions launched a 72-hour strike, leading some courthouses to close nationwide. However, because not all judiciary workers’ unions are participating in the strike, many courthouses reportedly remain open. Associated demonstrations are not currently planned but are possible. ​

Context

Judiciary workers’ unions in Benin launched the strike to protest a December 28 law that prohibits public sector workers from striking.

There has been mounting discontent among the Beninese population in recent months over the perceived poor management of the country by President Patrice Talon. Benin is currently facing a severe economic crisis, with unemployment at its highest point and purchasing power at its lowest in recent memory. Civil servant strikes and protests have become common in recent months.
