Australia: Severe heatwave conditions in south through Jan. 28 /update 1

Event

“Severe” heatwave conditions, the second-highest level on a four-tier scale, are expected to continue through Tuesday, January 30, in New South Wales and South Australia, with temperatures oscillating around 40°C (104°F) in both states. “Extreme” heatwave conditions (the highest alert level) are expected in northern parts of Tasmania through Sunday, January 28.

Australia Day celebrations, set to take place on January 26, have been canceled in the city of Adelaide (South Australia), where temperatures are forecast to reach 38°C (100°F).

Bushfires are possible in some areas due to the heatwave and following a dry winter.

Context

Similar extreme weather caused widespread problems throughout southeast Australia in early 2017, including power outages.

Advice

Individuals in Australia are advised to follow local weather reports, stay well-hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day and avoid alcohol), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from noon to 16:00).
