Algeria: Student protest continues in Constantine January 29

Cyclical protest movement continues in Constantine January 29; public transportation disruptions reported

Warning

Event

Students from Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) continued their cyclical protest in Constantine on Monday, January 29. Around 07:30 (local time), students attempted to block access to the University of Constantine 3, but were quickly dispersed by security agents. Protesters then moved to the city center, where a dozen students blocked the Kadour Boumedous tram station, causing major disruptions on tram services in the afternoon.

Associated protests are expected to be held every Monday until the movement is called off.

Context

Students from ENS launched a cyclical protest in November 2017 against the removal of Article 4 from the admission contract. Article 4 guarantees students access to master's and doctoral programs and gives them preferential consideration in the civil service hiring process.

Advice

Individuals in Constantine are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and allow for extra time to reach their destinations on Mondays until the movement is called off.
