Algeria: Medical worker sit-in in Algiers prolonged overnight Jan. 23-24 /update 2

Medical worker sit-in in Algiers prolonged overnight January 23-24; police prevent protesters outside Algiers to join the gathering

Warning

Event

Medical students and residents continued their sit-in in front of the CHU Mustapha Bacha university hospital in Algiers overnight January 23-24. Police forces were deployed in large numbers around the hospital. No clashes were reported, with protesters remaining inside the hospital complex and thus not breeching the ban on demonstrations in the city of Algiers. However, police prevented medical residents from outside Algiers from joining the sit-in on Tuesday, January 23; several were stopped while on a training traveling from Annaba train, an action denounced by the Autonomous Community of Algerian Resident Doctors (CAMRA).

Context

The CAMRA had already organized a sit-in in front of the hospital on January 3. Police forces dispersed the protest, leading to clashes that left at least 20 people injured.

Advice

Individuals in Algeria are advised to avoid any form of protest due to the risk of violence, keep abreast of the situation, and confirm medical appointments.
