Algeria: Indefinite nationwide paramedics' strike beginning February 5 /update 3

Algerian paramedics' union announces end of nationwide weekly strike January 27; nationwide indefinite strike planned to begin February 5

Warning

Event

The Algerian paramedics' union (Syndicat Algérien des Paramédicaux [SAP]) announced the end of its cyclical weekly strike on Saturday, January 27. The announcement came after a court decision declared the ongoing nationwide medical workers' strike illegal on Wednesday, January 24; however, the SAP announced that it would launch a new, nationwide indefinite strike on Monday, February 5. Related medical service disruptions are expected from February 5 until a resolution is reached between the SAP and the Algerian government.

Context

According to local media sources, the striking SAP workers demand better safety protections for paramedics, sufficient staffing and medical equipment, improved paramedical training programs, and bonuses for senior paramedics.

Groups of Algerian healthcare workers launched a strike on January 8 to raise awareness regarding the malfunctioning of the healthcare system and its negative effect on working conditions (e.g. violent behavior from patients, work overload, etc.). Initially, workers went on strike two days per week (Mondays and Tuesdays); the Algerian government's lack of an adequate response had prompted striking groups to increase their strike activity to three days per week (Monday to Wednesday) in recent weeks.

Advice

Individuals in Algeria are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid related demonstrations and protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Confirm doctor's appointments and anticipate related medical service disruptions at hospitals and health clinics if strikes resume.
