UAE: Expected rainfall poses flooding risk December 15-18

Heavy rainfall forecast in northern UAE from late December 15 until December 18; flooding and consequent traffic disruptions possible

Warning

Event

Potentially heavy rainfall is forecast in the northern UAE between late Friday, December 15, and Monday, December 18. Mountainous areas are expected to be particularly affected; nearby valleys (wadian) face the highest risk of flooding. Associated winds from the storm are also expected to cause blowing sand in the coming days. Consequent traffic disruptions are to be expected while the adverse weather conditions persist.

Context

During the rainy season, which extends from October to March, torrential rains and flooding occur on a regular basis in the UAE.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas in the UAE are advised to monitor local weather reports, allow for extra travel time in affected areas, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
