Spain: Iberia strike at Barcelona Airport Dec. 21-24

Iberia staff announce they will strike from December 21-24 at the El Prat Airport (BCN) in Barcelona; flight disruptions may occur

Warning

Event

Airport staff at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport (BCN) announced that they will go on strike from Thursday, December 21, through Sunday, December 24. Around 2000 ground, check-in, and cabin crew members for the International Airlines Group (IAG), including Vueling, Iberia, and British Airways are expected to participate in the strike. Work stoppages lasting four hours are expected to take place each day of the proposed strike; as of Tuesday, December 12, the exact times of the stoppages have not been announced. Unless averted, the action is expected to cause flight disruptions at BCN during the busy holiday travel season.

Context

According to the General Workers’ Union, IAG has not offered a solution for the current critical staffing problems. Workers claim that the rapid expansion of IAG without expanding the workforce has forced many employees to work without adequate breaks.

Advice

Individuals traveling to, from, or through BCN during the strike are advised to monitor the situation, confirm flight reservations, and contact their airline for additional information.
