Panama: Heavy rain in Colón results in flooding and traffic disruptions Dec. 12

Heavy rains resulted in flooding and traffic disruptions in the city of Colón on Tuesday, December 12. Some 15.4 cm (6 in) of rain reportedly fell in Colón over five hours on Tuesday, according to the Panamanian National System of Civil Protection (SINAPROC). The flooding has led to significant traffic disruptions on major roads in the city, including on Amador Guerrero, Justo Arosemena, Meléndez, and Central avenues, among others. Continued flooding and associated traffic disruptions are possible in Colón as additional rainfall is forecast in the coming days.

Flooding and landslides are relatively common during Panama's long rainy season, which extends from March until December.

Individuals present in Colón and surrounding areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, to avoid areas directly affected by flooding, and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Additionally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, all items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected and any foodstuffs discarded.
