Warning

Event

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) party is planning a march in Kuala Lumpur to Merdaka Square late on Sunday, December 31 (local time), in protest of rising fuel prices. Roughly 5000 PH supporters are expected to participate in the rally, which is scheduled to begin at roughly 22:00 from SOGO shopping mall. Skirmishes between PH supporters and supporters of the ruling National Front (BN) party are possible during the demonstration. A heightened security presence and associated traffic disruptions are expected in Kuala Lumpur along the march route and surrounding areas.

Context

PH party leaders hope to pressure the Malaysian government to cap the price of "regular" unleaded gasoline (RON 95) at RM 1.90 per liter, and diesel at RM 1.80 per liter.

Advice

Individuals in Kuala Lumpur are advised to avoid all gatherings and protests and to adhere to all instructions issued by authorities.
