India: Road closures after Kashmir snowfall Dec. 11-12

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and the Mughal Road in Jammu and Kashmir closed December 11-12 due to snowfall; further disruptions possible in coming days

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the Mughal Road, and numerous local roads in Jammu and Kashmir were closed on Monday, December 11, and Tuesday, December 12, following heavy snowfall in the region. Reports say further snowfall is likely through Thursday, December 14, with further transportation disruptions expected.

Authorities have also warned of the high risk of avalanches in mountainous regions; on Tuesday, five soldiers reportedly went missing in the Naugam area of Kashmir following an avalanche.

Context

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is the only road that connects Kashmir to the rest of India year-round.
