Informational

Event

Ecuador’s Vice President Jorge Glas was found guilty on corruption charges and sentenced to six years in prison on Wednesday, December 13. Glas was accused of accepting USD 13.5 million in bribes while serving under former President Rafael Correa, in connection with the massive Odebrecht scandal. Correa and others have claimed the trial was politically motivated. Associated protests are possible, particularly in the capital Quito.

Context

Investigations into Odebrecht, a Brazilian construction company, have uncovered a widespread network of government officials bribed to secure contracts, implicating high-ranking politicians across Latin America.

Glas was relieved of his duties in August ahead of his indictment but still technically remains vice president as he has refused to resign. He will likely be removed from office in early January.

Advice

Individuals in Ecuador are advised to avoid any protests as a precaution.
