Comoros: Opposition meetings banned in Anjouan

Local authorities ban opposition meetings scheduled in Anjouan over the weekend Dec. 9-10; increased political tensions likely

Warning

Event

Over the weekend of December 9-10, prefectural authorities prevented opposition parties from holding a meeting - which had been called for in order to form a coalition - on the island of Anjouan. The government had initially given its permission for the meeting to go ahead before banning it without explanation. Security forces reportedly prevented opposition activists from entering the two venues where meetings were expected to be held. Increased sociopolitical tensions are likely in the coming weeks as a consequence.

Context

The country is currently preparing to hold national inter-party meetings to create a bipartisan report on the state of the country after 42 years of independence.

Strikes and protests are regularly held in Comoros, during which clashes between security forces and protesters sometimes occur.

Advice

Individuals present in Anjouan are advised to keep abreast of the situation and avoid all gatherings as violence may flare up without warning.
