Rebel attack in the restive region of Ingushetia leaves two dead and two injured November 5

On Sunday, November 5, a group of Islamist insurgents carried out an attack against a traffic police checkpoint in the Nazran district of Ingushetia, at around 18:00 (local time), killing one policeman and injuring two others. A counter-terrorism operation was immediately launched to find the assailants. According to state media, at least one of the attackers has been killed and security forces continue to search for the others.

Context

Armed attacks against security forces are frequent in Russia’s North Caucasus region since a group of Islamist insurgents pledged their allegiance to the Islamic State (IS). Moreover, Russia continues to be a target of various terrorist attacks by IS since it launched its military intervention in Syria, in September 2015.
