Indonesia: Government threatens to block WhatsApp Nov. 6

Government threatens to block communication application WhatsApp

Warning

Event

On Monday, November 6, government officials threatened to block the WhatsApp communication application. According the government, the application's message encryption prevents it from monitoring content, sparking concerns over inappropriate content.

Context

The Indonesian government had previously sent three letters to WhatsApp, demanding it allow the monitoring of animated image files.

WhatsApp provides message encryption technology, which can circumvent Indonesia's monitored and at-times restricted cyberspace.

Advice

Individuals are advised to not rely on WhatsApp for communication purposes due to the possibility of future blockages.

Due to the heightened threat of terrorism in Indonesia, remain vigilant when visiting sites deemed particularly likely to be targeted (public transportation, train stations, ports, airports, public or government buildings, embassies or consulates, international organizations, schools and universities, religious sites, markets, hotels and restaurants frequented by foreigners/Westerners, festivals, etc.).
