Increased security and major traffic disruptions are expected amid International Cricket Tournament in Lahore September 12-15

Warning

Event

The Independence Cup 2017 International Cricket Tournament, taking place from Tuesday, September 12, to Friday, September 15, will cause major traffic disruptions in Lahore. According to local sources, increased security measures are in place and 8000 police officers have been deployed, as well as an unknown number of paramilitary forces.

Traffic police have closed roads around Gaddafi stadium, including Canal Road, Ferozepur Road, and all major roads leading to Gulberg. In addition, security forces have installed multiple layers of security checkpoints at the stadium’s entrances.

Mall Road has also been shut down around the Pearl Continental Hotel, which is hosting most members of international teams. Severe traffic disruptions have been reported in the surrounding area, including Davis Road, Garhi Shahu and Queens Road.

Context

The Independence Cup 2017 International Cricket Tournament is taking place in Lahore from September 12 to September 15, with Pakistan hosting an international World XI team set to play three matches against the home Pakistan team.

Most international cricket teams suspended travel to Pakistan after a March 2009 attack killed seven Sri Lankan players. In May 2015, a suicide bombing left two dead during a visit from the Zimbabwean team. Organizers hope this week’s tournament will help revive Pakistan’s role on the international cricket stage.

Advice

Individuals in Lahore are advised to exercise caution and strictly avoid all demonstrations and gatherings, including sports matches, which could be targeted in an attack. Monitor the situation over the coming days, anticipate heightened security measures, and follow any instructions issued by the local authorities.

As a reminder, Western governments advise their citizens against nonessential travel to Pakistan due to the high risk nationwide of terrorism, kidnapping, and sectarian violence. Travel should only be considered with strict security protocols in place.
