Honduras celebrates Semana Morazánica October 2-9; additional security deployed

Warning

Event

Honduras will celebrate the Semana Morazánica from Monday, October 2, until Monday, October 9. Government employees will not be required to work during the holiday week, except security-related positions. Officials expect up to 2.5 million people to head to the country’s tourist areas; transportation delays should be expected for the duration of the holiday week. In addition, the government plans to deploy 20,000 security personnel countrywide to ensure the safety of Honduras’ tourist hotspots.

Context

Semana Morazánica is an annual holiday week that was created in 2015 to combine three separate public holidays into a single consecutive week. It is named after Francisco Morazán, a 19th century Honduran politician.

Advice

Individuals in Honduras are advised to exercise vigilance regarding the increased risk of petty crime (carry only small amounts of cash, leave copies of passports/credit cards in a safe location, etc.) and to allow for additional time to reach their destinations.
