Egypt: UK lifts cabin electronics ban for flights from Cairo /update 1

Event

The government of the United Kingdom lifted a ban on passengers carrying larger electronic devices (i.e., laptops, DVD players, tablets, e-readers, and digital cameras) on EgyptAir flights from Cairo International Airport (CAI) to the UK, effective Saturday, September 2.

Officials in the UK reported that the ban was lifted following the introduction of new security measures, and that further easing of existing restrictions is being evaluated on a case by case basis.

Context

In March, British officials announced that passengers on direct flights from six countries to the UK would not be allowed to travel with electronic devices larger than a standard smartphone in their carry-on luggage. These devices need to be packed into luggage and checked in before going through airport security.

As a reminder, this ban has since been lifted for select flights from Turkey and all flights from Tunisia, Jordan, and Egypt. It is still in effect for direct flights from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and certain Turkish airports.
