Tunisia: Violent protests in Tunis July 3; further protests possible

The Ministry of the Interior reports that two policemen were wounded and 47 individuals arrested after clashes broke out on Monday, July 3, in the capital Tunis between street vendors and the police. These incidents occurred during a rally being held in front of the headquarters of the Tunisian General Union of Labor (UGTT), in protest of the government's recent crackdown on unauthorized street vendors. According to the ministry, the situated turned violent after police intervened, with protesters throwing stones and damaging vehicles, and the police responding with tear gas.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Further protests are possible.

Context

In June, local authorities launched a campaign against unauthorized street vendors, which have increased in number since the 2011 revolution amidst rising poverty and unemployment levels. On June 19, the local government in Tunis issued an ultimatum that all unauthorized street vendors must evacuate their stalls within five days. Surrounding municipalities launched similar campaigns.
