Switzerland: Security increased at borders over the summer

Officials announce increased security measures along the borders over the summer

Informational

Event

Canton governors announced on Thursday, June 29, that increased preventative security measures will be implemented at the Swiss border in July and August. An intercantonal force of 50 police officers will be created to be deployed, as requested, to arrest individuals entering the country illegally. The force is likely to be deployed in the cantons of Ticino, Valais, and Graudünden. Possible delays associated with the increase in security should be anticipated at border crossings.

Context

These measures come as Swiss authorities expect increased illegal border crossings over the summer, in part due to  an increase in illegal border crossings in 2016 on the borders with France, Germany, and Italy.

Advice

Due to the underlying threat of terrorism, individuals are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or behavior. Travelers should anticipate possible delays associated with increased security at border crossings and cooperate fully with local authorities.
