Sri Lanka: US Embassy warns women against use of tuk-tuks June 29

On Thursday, June 29, the US Embassy in Colombo issued a statement advising women traveling alone against the use of tuk-tuks, or autorickshaws, due to complaints of sexual harassment. The embassy also stated that the majority of reported incidents occur at the end of a ride and advised individuals to ask to take photos of the driver and registration plate before using a tuk-tuk.

Context

Sri Lanka has around 1.2 million tuk-tuks, which are often used in countries where public transportation networks are poor.

Advice

Individuals are advised to avoid using tuk-tuks if possible. If it is necessary to use a tuk-tuk, it is advisable to ask to take photos of the driver and registration plate before agreeing to the ride.
