Serbia: Heatwave warning issued throughout the country July 11-12

Local authorities issued red alerts throughout Serbia on July 11 amid a fierce heatwave hitting the Balkans, which is expected to continue until Wednesday, July 12.  Temperatures soaring over 40°C (104°F) are expected and thunderstorms are forecast in the regions of Bačka and Banat.

On Monday, July 10, a wildfire fanned by warm winds erupted on the outskirts of the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica, endangering suburban homes. Further wildfires are possible amid the ongoing dry, hot conditions and could lead to  material damages or transportation disruptions.

Advice

Individuals in areas affected by extreme temperatures are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, to remain well-hydrated (with sugar-free, non-alcoholic beverages), to wear loose, light-colored clothing, and to remain indoors during the hottest part of the day (generally between 10:00 and 15:00). Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if displaying symptoms of heatstroke (headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, lack of sweating despite high heat, rapid heartbeat, etc.).
