Warning

Event

On Thursday, July 20, Revolutionary Guard forces reportedly killed three suspected terrorists and wounded four others in clashes in the northwest area of the country near the Iraqi and Turkish borders. Reports indicate that one Guard member was killed and another wounded in the fighting.

The region, home to the Kurdish population, has been the site of occasional clashes between Iranian security forces, Kurdish separatists, and Islamic State (IS)-affiliated militants.

Context

IS launched its first offensive in Iran on June 7 with coordinated attacks at the Iranian Parliament and the Khomeini Mausoleum in Tehran. Since then, Iranian authorities have launched a series of anti-terrorist operations, resulting in the deaths and arrests of many suspected militants in the country.

There is a persistent threat of terrorism in Iran due to the involvement of Iranian forces and militias fighting IS within the context of the Syrian conflict.

Advice

Individuals in Iran are advised to exercise vigilance and report any suspicious objects or behavior to the local authorities, particularly when in crowded places, and to be prepared for heightened security measures. All individuals should cooperate with authorities and always carry appropriate identification.
