Media sources reported on Tuesday, July 11, that three Mexican nationals were killed and two wounded in an attack along the Pan-American Highway in the Camojá community in Guatemala near the border with Mexico. The victims were traveling in a van from La Democracia, Guatemala, to El Jocote and Frontera Comalapa in Chiapas, Mexico, when they were attacked by assailants with AK-47 assault rifles. One of the wounded was reportedly tortured by the assailants. It is unclear what the motive for the attack was and no arrests have been made.

Context

Attacks and other criminal activities along the highway are common near La Mesilla and Frontera Compalapa along the Mexico-Guatemala border. The highway is a main route used by traffickers to move arms, people, and drugs.
