Chile: Rare snowstorm hits Santiago July 15

A rare snowstorm hit the capital city of Santiago and its surrounding areas on Saturday, July 15. Between 3 to 5 cm (1-2 in) of snow fell on the capital, causing power outages and traffic disruptions. Around 250,000 people lost power, mostly due to trees falling on power lines. Media sources reported that at least one person died trying to clear ice and another two were injured. City authorities have asked residents to avoid all unnecessary travel. Temperatures are forecast to drop to  -5 °C (23°F) on the night of Sunday, July 16. Additional icy conditions are likely.

Context

According to meteorologists, this is the heaviest snowfall in Santiago since 2007. The last time snow fell in Santiago was in 2011.
