Australia: Terror plot disrupted, security measures extended July 30

On Sunday, July 30, police disrupted a terror plot to bring down an airplane by arresting four men during raids in the suburbs of Sydney. According to officials, suspected assailants planned on using an improvised device to carry out the attack.

Additional security measures originally implemented at the Sydney International Airport on Thursday, July 27, have been extended to all major domestic and international terminals throughout the country. Officials advised travelers to arrive at airports two hours before their scheduled departure.

Context

According to Justice Minister Michael Keenan, this is the 13th terrorist plot to be disrupted by police since 2014 when the terrorist threat level was increased. Five terrorist plots have been successfully carried out.

On January 20, six people were killed and 30 others injured after a vehicle struck pedestrians in Melbourne's Bourke Street.
