Portugal: Fire warnings in Algarve June 28

Event

As of Wednesday, June 28, maximum fire alerts remain in effect in the extreme south (Algarve region). The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued warnings for the Faro district's Castro Marim, Tavira, and Alcoutim. Parts of central, northern, and southern Portugal are currently under lesser fire alerts, while most coastal areas are not under any fire warnings.

A map of the affected areas can be found at the IPMA website. The authorities have advised residents in affected areas to keep their radios on and to follow all instructions, e.g. potential evacuation orders.

Context

The IPMA has indicated that the country remains in a critical period until September 30. While forest fires are common every summer in Portugal, this month's fires have been the deadliest in Portugal's history, resulting in at least 64 fatalities and approximately 30,000 hectares of land burned in central Portugal between June 17 and 22.
