Thousands of protesters rallied in the streets of the capital Rabat on Sunday, June 11, in solidarity with the ongoing protest movement in the town of Al-Hoceima, located in the Rif region. The demonstrators protested the arrest and prosecution of many involved with the movement, including a leader who was arrested on May 29. Since that date, demonstrations have occurred nightly in Al-Hoceima, where clashes with security forces are regularly reported. Protests have also taken place elsewhere in the Rif region.

Context

This current wave of anti-government demonstrations began on May 18 to demand better jobs, healthcare services, and infrastructure. At least 40 people have been arrested since mid-May.
