Chile: Red alerts due to torrential rains June 19

Various regions on red alert June 19 for storms and heavy rainfall; flooding may occur

Warning

Event

Chile's meteorological service issued "red" alerts at 21:30 (local time) on Sunday, June 18, for the regions of Coquimbo, Los Lagos, Valparaiso, O'Higgins, Los Ríos, Maule, Bío Bío, and Araucania, as well as the Santiago Metropolitan region, due to expected storms and torrential rains. The risk of flooding cannot be ruled out; increased rates of traffic accidents and ground transportation disruptions are also possible.

Advice

Individuals present in the above areas are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders) and to monitor the situation via local media and weather reporting outlets. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
