Brazil: Heavy rains in Rio June 20 cause severe flooding

Heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, June 20, caused severe flooding that blocked roadways across as many as 15 neighborhoods. More rain was expected on June 21, increasing the risk of landslides in the area. According to some news sources, parts of the city received significantly more rain in 24 hours than was anticipated for the entire month. Between June 20 and the early morning hours of June 21, flood alert sirens were reportedly activated in 14 neighborhoods and public and private transportation was significantly disrupted, particularly in the areas of Gávea, Leblon, Lagoa, Humaitá, and Botafogo.

Torrential rains regularly hit the northeast of the country, as well as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, sometimes leading to deadly mudslides and floods. The rainy season in the northeast runs from April to July, and from November until March in the south and southeast.
