Algeria: Teacher protest in Algiers June 22

Teachers call for protest in front of the Ministry of Higher Education in Algiers on June 22

Warning

Event

Academics and university lecturers in Algeria have called for a protest to be held on Thursday, June 22, in front of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the capital Algiers. The call was made after yet another teacher was found dead at the University of Khemis Milana last week.

Context

Teachers in Algeria plan to protest against what they consider the indifference, irresponsibility, and trivialization of murderous violence in Algerian universities. Last week’s incident was not the first of its kind in Algeria, and teachers have called many times for authorities to address the issue. On May 24, 2017, a professor was beaten unconscious by university students.

Advice

Individuals in Algiers are advised to avoid any form of protests and to keep abreast of the situation.
