Informational

Event

The Central Union of Workers' union (Central Unitaria de Trabajadores de Colombia, CUT) has called for a national strike to take place on Tuesday, May 16, to demand better wages and collective bargaining for public sector workers, in particular teachers. Other groups have voiced their support for the strike including judicial and oil sector workers, as well as some of the country's major unions.

A march is scheduled to take place in the capital Bogotá beginning at 08:00 (local time) from Parque Nacional to Plaza de Bolívar. Some traffic disruptions may occur. The march will likely remain non-violent but clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

The strike follows a failed round of negotiations between education sector workers and the government over wage increases and improved working conditions.

Advice

Individuals present in Bogotá are advised to avoid all demonstrations.
