Myanmar: Flooding cuts Yangon-Mandalay highway August 29

Significant flooding blocks the Yangon-Mandalay highway in central Myanmar on August 29 after water breached the Swar dam; at least three communities also flooded

At least one town and two villages were flooded near Swar after water breached a nearby dam on Wednesday, August 29. According to the Myanmar Fire Services Department, search-and-rescue operations are ongoing as of 10:00 (local time). The highway connecting Yangon to Mandalay and the capital city of Naypyitaw has also been closed in the area due to flooding. Water levels reportedly rose up to 1 m (3 ft) around the highway. Localized traffic disruptions are anticipated in the area in the coming hours and days.
