Ukraine: Commemorative events expected in Kyiv November 21

Commemorative events expected in Kyiv for Day of Dignity and Freedom on November 21

Warning

Event

Several events are scheduled to take place in Kyiv on Wednesday, November 21, to commemorate the November 2013 Euromaidan demonstrations which culminated in the February 2014 Ukrainian Revolution (Revolution of Dignity). Large crowds are expected to gather in Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square), Shevchenko Park, and St. Sophia Square. A significantly heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are expected in Kyiv, particularly near Maidan Nezalezhnosti and nearby Khreschatyk Street.

Context

The Euromaidan movement started on November 21, 2013 and resulted in the ouster of then-President Viktor Yanukovych. Some commemoration events in 2016 turned violent, with crowds targeting Russian businesses, such as banks and diplomatic missions.

Advice

Individuals in Kyiv are advised to monitor developments to the situation, allow for extra time to reach their destinations, and avoid all protests as a precaution.
